Part of the confusion is that there is monitor adjustment and then there is monitor calibration, but the word calibration has recently become an umbrella term that people use to cover the both practices. To really calibrate your monitor you need a special hardware that ranged in price from #30,000 for prosumer quality gear to much more than that amount for top-tier professional gear. Unless you are a big photographer that can prints a lot of photos or your work has similar color accuracy requirements, there will really be no need for that expense.

Rather, what you have to do is to make adjustments to your monitor so that images are clearer, have good contrast, and the color is accurate enough. Making sure that the images you see on the screen looks natural, whites are not oddly tinted, etc.

Looking at the screen displayed above, you will notice a dim and stuck pixels. A dim pixel is a pixel which has what could be described as a ghost like appearance just like the one at the left hand side. When the colors change it changes, but it is always just a bit dimmer than the surrounding pixels and has a grayish cast. A stuck pixel in the other hand is a pixel that registers a certain color and fails to change when the display sends a new signal like the one on the right hand side. When the image on the screen changes from red to blue, stuck pixel lingers on as a red one.

Usually, monitors shipped from the manufacturer in what amounts to display mode, are shipped with high contrast and high brightness to look good on a brightly lit showroom. Taking a few minutes to calibrate and adjust your monitor to look best in your office is definitely worth it.
